Getting Published for the First Time #writerslife

A guest post by one of the Cinderella Reimagined authors, Ronel Janse van Vuuren

I’ve been writing for years, honing my craft, finding my voice, and entering competitions (because that’s what you do).

Writing has always been a way for me to deal with my emotions. When I wrote “Just Deserts”, I couldn’t get near my computer. I had to use visual aids from magazines, write in a notebook, and take care of Tony’s injuries all at the same time. (Tony had gotten into a fight with, I presume, Callum and his whole face was a mess.)

I found these while doing a bit of autumn cleaning:

I think they might all be from Women’s Health magazine…

Something magical happened with that story. After it was finished, I published a chapter a day (I wrote it as chapters) on Wattpad. It climbed the ranks to somewhere in the top 500 and something. It was amazing. And I thought it would end there…

A few months later, heartbroken because I had to euthanise one of my Rotties, I got an invitation from a (then) new blogging friend to submit a Cinderella retelling for an anthology competition she was organising.

I had “Just Deserts” and thought it would be a fit. I also rewrote a flash piece, “Lights”. Seriously, I had no idea what would happen and I concentrated on getting my mind back into writing.

Then I got the email… Both pieces were accepted for the “Cinderella Reimagined” anthology!

I couldn’t believe it.

Though I’ve done rather well with my writing (winning awards and competitions), I wasn’t published yet. Each submission before this one (or is it two?) were rejected for various reasons. I got another email from another group about another story I’d submitted and it was accepted for publication too!

Maybe it means that my writing is meant for anthologies and not for lit mags? Maybe. Or maybe this just happened to be the right time for these stories to be read and appreciated by others.

Being accepted for the Cinderella anthology gave me the courage to try my hand at a bigger competition… And I won again! My book was published. (I’ve since published it in all formats – check out my Amazon author page.) It’s been an interesting journey, going from writing a story on a couch (Rottweiler on my lap) to being published.

Ronel wrote “Just Deserts” and “Lights”. Check them out on “Cinderella Reimagined: An Anthology of Cinderella Retellings”. The paperback is currently available on Amazon, still on its introductory price. A revised edition and ebook version will be released soon.
